How Deep Are Water Wells in Parker & Hood County?

A look at the Trinity Aquifer layers under both counties, typical residential well depths, and why a new well often has to go deeper than the one your neighbor drilled ten years ago.

If you're asking how deep are water wells in Parker County — or across the county line in Hood County — the short answer is that most residential wells run 100 to 400 feet deep, with a statewide average around 225 feet. But that range covers a lot of variation, and where your well falls in it depends on which layer of the Trinity Aquifer it draws from and where your property sits relative to that layer's outcrop.

The Trinity Aquifer, Layer by Layer

Both counties sit entirely on the Trinity Aquifer, which is really a stack of distinct formations, top to bottom:

  • Paluxy sand — the uppermost water-bearing layer and Parker County's workhorse formation. It supplies more water in Parker County than every other formation combined, and it's generally the better-quality option of the two main producing sands.
  • Glen Rose — a limestone and marl layer beneath the Paluxy that acts as a leaky confining layer between the sands above and below it. Some shallow domestic wells are completed in the Glen Rose itself.
  • Twin Mountains (also called Travis Peak) — the deepest and most prolific Trinity formation in North-Central Texas by volume, but its water generally carries more minerals than the Paluxy above it.

Where the Glen Rose thins out between the Paluxy and Twin Mountains, the two sands effectively merge into a single water-bearing unit known locally as the Antlers Formation.

Why Well Depth Varies So Much Across Two Counties

The biggest factor in how deep a well needs to go isn't the county line — it's whether a formation is at or near the surface (an outcrop) or buried deeper (downdip) at a given location.

The Twin Mountains formation actually outcrops across western Hood and Parker County — toward Lipan, Millsap, and west of Weatherford. In those areas, wells can be drilled shallower because a productive formation is closer to the surface. The tradeoff is water quality: outcrop-zone Twin Mountains water tends to be harder and more iron-heavy than water drawn from the same formation further downdip, or from the Paluxy where it's still available.

Moving east and toward the interior of both counties, the productive sands sit deeper below the surface, so wells have to be drilled further to reach them — but often into the better-quality Paluxy rather than the Twin Mountains.

Why a New Well Might Be Deeper Than Your Neighbor's

It's common for a homeowner to drill a new well and end up with a completion depth noticeably greater than a well drilled on the same road twenty years ago. That's usually not an error — it reflects declining water levels as the area has grown. Parker County has reported more new water wells drilled than any other county in Texas (559 in one reporting period), and all those additional straws in the same aquifer put pressure on water levels, particularly during dry years.

The Peaster area saw a stark example of this during the 2011 drought, when local water levels fell 1.75 feet in just three weeks — a decline that would normally take an entire summer. Events like that push new wells to be drilled deeper, or set pumps lower in existing wells, to keep reaching water reliably.

Every well drilled by a licensed driller in Texas has a State Well Report filed on it — a public record documenting the well's depth, the formation it's completed in, casing, and other construction details.
